Credibility
Nothing which could ever be gained by deceit is worth the cost. Once credibility has been lost, it might never be completely regained. Without credibility, it is impossible to sustain any kind of success. In an environment of distrust and suspicion, very little can ever get done.
Promises and commitments are not just devices for achieving the purpose of the moment. In the bigger picture, they have the very real potential to either build credibility, or to consume it. As such, commitments must be carefully chosen and promises prudently made with consideration for whether or not they can followed through.
A reputation, once tarnished, is exceedingly difficult to rebuild. Better to put your efforts into keeping that reputation strong, positive and growing rather than working to defend it from your own folly.
A strong and genuine degree of credibility can take you a long way. Be careful not to compromise this valuable asset for the convenience of the moment. Stay true to your word, honor your commitments, and reap the immense long-term value which can be achieved in no other way.
